Lombok Mount Rinjani National Park
Mount Rinjani is an active volcano on the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is the 2nd highest volcanic mountain in the country. It has an amazing landscape that has been created from million years of violent explosions as well as erosion. The forested slopes rise directly from the sea to function as water supplies for the island. The forested slopes make their own weather pattern.
The mountain is the 3rd largest volcanic mountain in Indonesia, rising to 3,726 meters or 12,224 feet. Its earliest recorded eruption was in September 1847. The mountain has a sacred and amazing crater lake, Segara Anak, and is located in a national park built in 1997, Rinjani National Park which is one of the 40+ National Parks in Indonesia. The lake partially fills a 6 km by 8.5 km caldera on top of the mountain. A small cone is formed in the middle of the caldera because of the eruptions occurring in 1994 to 1996. Lava flows from the eruptions have come into the lake.
The majority of the forest-clad highlands are underdeveloped. On the other hand, the lowlands are well cultivated. You can find major crops such as rice, coffee, tobacco, soybeans, cinnamon, cotton, and vanilla in the productive soils of the small island. Belibis, an endemic duck, as well as some species of fish can also be found in Rinjani.
The volcanic mountain is considered to be sacred by the Sasak, native people of Lombok, since they believe that the Gods reside there. Thousands of pilgrims go to the crater lake, Segara Anak, to put offerings in the water as well as get rid of illness by bathing in the caldera hot springs.
There are more than 20 villages surrounding the mountain, and there are also various climbing routes up Rinjani. The main route can be taken via Sembalun Lawang on the eastern side as well as Senaru on the northern side.
If you want to experience what is regarded as one of the most excellent treks in Southeast Asia, then you can take the exciting 3-days or 4-days Trek direction from Senaru village to the spectacular crater rim, down to the amazing crater lake, and then proceed to Sembalun Lawang. People who want to reach to the top of the mountain generally prefer to start the trek from Sembalun Lawang. The community based activities is a model for Indonesia’s ecotourism, focused on the trek center in Senaru, which is the most popular route for the tough trek.
